17th August 2025

What a day.

Several interesting finds. Tired after a long, hot and dusty day but very happy. 🙂

A Roman brooch with its pin. Somehow the presence of the pin and the fact that I could actually wear it connected me to the previous owner from all that time ago.

A Roman Denarius: one chap on the dig said he had never seen this amount of detail on any Denarius before.

A Roman scribe’s stylus?: used for wax tablets You can’t see it in the picture, but one end is pointed for the scribing and the other is flat (for rubbing out).

Nearly 1.5 inches thick

Dear LS, I love the fact that as your finds collection expands, so also does the inclusion of non-metallic objects. Excellent. CBM can be very diagnostic. And far from incidental. Brilliant. Tuppence ha’penny 👍

Dear TH, Thanks. Yes, I’m spotting more and more now. It makes the day so much more interesting too as without a signal in sight there is always something to look out for. Never a dull moment! 🙂

Great set of objects. Very impressive. Amazing that you could actually wear that brooch.
I’m curious about the piece of glass/crystal, terracotta brick (?), and the small spherical object.
    Keep on digging!

      Hi Steve!
Thanks. I know, I can remember reaching down and lifting it out of the ground. Something about knowing the significance of the find freezes the moment in time whilst at the same time spans 2 millenia (in this case). I don’t know what the glass bit is, possibly not anything much. The terracotta brick is very thick, I will upload another picture. And a musket ball.
